  • English is a descriptive language
    Diary/2021 2021. 11. 9. 22:27

It's been more than a half year since I've used English at work, and I felt the improvement in my English skills, especially for writing and speaking. English is a very descriptive language and has a lower risk of being interpreted differently than Korean, including structural flaws. The biggest drawback of the Korean language is the inconsistency between the Chinese words and their representation in the Korean alphabet, Hangul. When you study the etymology of English, it is clear how to dissect the English words because there's no additional layer between the Latin alphabet and the Latin and the Greek words made by them.

The descriptiveness of English can be a huge benefit when writing code too. I was surprised in 2014 when I first took online coding classes in English because the tutors just spoke out loud the instruction line by line, made the comments first, and converted them to code. They tend to be descriptive as much as they can. This approach differed from the Korean tutors I've met, including the university professors. Koreans are used to working in a non-descriptive way, called 'nunchi,' and it's an essential skill to have when you live in Korea. Of course, for the fast and rapid economic development, but I'm not sure it's still a valid argument in 2021.

But it's hard to say that descriptive communication is always suitable for every case because it requires a lot of resources compared to doing non-descriptive communication. So we should adopt both ways and switch between them. Keeping a balance is the most important and most challenging thing to do.
